A gangster accused of shooting two police officers faces the death penalty in California. John Hernandez Felix, 27, ambushed veteran cop Jose Gilbert Vega, 63, and rookie officer Lesley Zerebny, 27, after they responded to a family disturbance.

Felix was wearing body armour and was apprehended after a stand-off with police in Palm Springs on October 8. Officer Zerebny had a four-month-old daughter and had only recently returned from maternity leave.

"This was a heinous crime involving the murders of two police officers who were gunned down simply because they were police officers," Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin said.

"The victims in this case were responding to a call for service and died in the line of duty protecting our community."
